What Can and Cannot Go in a Dumpster

Accepted materials, prohibited items and California-specific disposal rules.

Generally accepted

Furniture, household junk, wood, drywall, flooring, cabinets, roofing shingles, yard waste and most construction debris.

Prohibited items

Paint, solvents, motor oil, batteries, tires, propane tanks, asbestos, and anything flammable or toxic. These need household hazardous waste programs.

California universal waste

Electronics, fluorescent bulbs and appliances with refrigerant are regulated in California and cannot go into a standard roll-off. Monterey County's regional waste facilities accept many of these items.
